Artist Mick Oxley writes …
Surrendering to using the wheelchair liberated me and allowed me to travel away from the house. One of my first journeys in 1999 was to the local village hall where there was a W.E.A. painting and drawing class. Luckily, it had a good and experienced teacher who not only encouraged me but also advocated a love of experimentation. I struggled at first, not knowing what to paint. It took a while for the penny to drop. I needed to utilise what I could see, feel and smell around me, to paint the sea and the shoreline.
I became a full-time artist in 2003 and opened my own gallery in the village in 2008. Although my health is labile, I manage to paint and get into the gallery fairly regularly.
My work has three main strands; watercolour and acrylic seascapes, textured studies of the shoreline and lately, abstracted views of the sea and sky.
The days sitting on the bench allowed the sea and its ways to saturate my very being. It has also provided me with a bottomless pool of inspiration and ideas.
